Bravo. The friends functionality is very helpful. It saves a good number of trips to the “search” tab and to the SecondLife friends online page. For standard users these are all very solid improvements.

Thanks for the hard work. Hopefully the locked message template will make retrofitting unnecessary in the future and fun can ensue.

Good job on the update! Lots of new functions to play around with. Though there’s something that bothers me regarding the appearance loading. Me and my friend have logged in using SLeek only to find the avatars’ skins to be checkered pink and dark blue the second the shapes gets loaded. This didn’t happen on the previous version though.

Is it possible to add a manual function to allow users to force rebake their textures? I did notice how the shape gets messed up again after teleporting to another simulator.

Yeah, I’m aware of the checkered avatar problem. The baking/appearance code in libsecondlife is going through some rewrites, and is evidently incomplete.

At worst, I’ll end up temporarily going back to the Ruth look. I’m not sure if that’d be considered more stylish than checkered pink and blue. ;)

But yeah, let’s hope it gets fixed soon.

Thanks for the hard work on this. I’m particularly liking the new friends management features.

I think I managed to crash it by changing the setting to Office 2003 style and then clicking Apply. I can’t get that pref to do anything either - not that I particularly *want* it myself, I was just fiddling :-D

Hi Delta,

Congratulations again, I didn’t expect an update of SLeek so quickly after the official SLviewer 1.18.0; and now, SLeek starts becoming really interesting. Great the multiple logins, friends list, accepting tp offers, and all the other new or improved functions. As far as I’ve seen, SLeek uses about 10 to 25% of the memory that the SLviewer does, and (of course) only 5% of its network traffic! I even think, this could evolve to a textbased SLviewer suitable for blind people too (some more work needed for the GUI to be accessible though). Sorry if this comment gets too long for a blog, but SLeek is exciting now, and I don’t know where to give my 2c input otherwise.

Regarding the problems of the actual version, pre-0.20 from July 17th, I confirm some already mentioned:

- checkered avatars: appear in most cases, but I had some exceptions too; the debug error says “Unimplemented asset type: Bodypart” (and Clothing). Besides that, the shape always seems to be Ruth. Attachments are displayed and functional (also AO’s). Let’s hope libsecondlife gets it fixed soon, bc this is a somewhat annoying “feature”…
- exception/error when trying to IM someone on the avatar list. But it works fine with friends or answering to an incoming IM.
- the update of the avatar list is not very reliable: sometimes it seems quite fast, sometimes it only happens after a while, or it gets outdated (not very sure about this observation).
- otherwise I had a few erratic situations leading to error/program closing (mainly with multiple SLviewers and SLeek open at the same time); sometimes SLeek closed abnormally but the process remained running in the background and your avi inworld, having to kill it manually. But I couldn’t reproduce them yet.

Regarding the features of this upcoming version, It would be really great to have the one or other slight improvement, if still possible:

- implement command line arguments for the login: -user, -password, -home/lastlocation, -port (-multiple doesn’t seem to be needed), maybe later others too, like -uri, -set, -settings …
- “rebake textures” command (in debug menu), as already proposed
- update function , for updating manually e.g. the avatar list and others. Maybe defining an update interval in the Settings menu would help too.
- default login place (home/last location) selectable and saved in the Settings menu too.
- display the distance of each avatar in the list; I hope it’s as easy to extract as in the scripting lang.
- sorting of the avatar list by name or by distance; sorting of the friends list by name or online-status.
- I’m missing the announced list of nearby objects… or wasn’t it intended for this version? Anyway, it should not be mixed up with the avatars list, but be displayed in a separated list.

And here some additional comments for the next release 0.30 or whatsoever (but you surely have them already all :)

- the direction the own avatar is actually facing, using geographic directions: N/S/W/E, and its intermediates in 15° intervals (e.g. SE, NNW …)
- exact coodinates of the own avatar, at least with 0.1 m precision. Could be useful for other avis and objects too.
- orientation of avatars and objects referred to the own avi (using the same system).
- status of the avatars: sitting, standing, flying, walking… as returned by the usual function. Then you could see in the list, the avi X.Z. is in sitting pose 34 m away in WSW direction…
- “inspect” function for an avatar, listing the attachments he/she wears.
- “walk to” functionality for avatars and nearby objects (risky, I know!)
- object list with possible actions, with working Sit on/Teleport functionality.
- minimap in tp functionality and maybe as a separated function too.
- snapshot function! this would be great for getting some visual idea of the environment from time to time, only when really needed.
- “Go away/AFK when idle” setting (debug menu)
- ability to just move objects, changing their absolute coordinates.
- still, I want some basic movement :)) kind of compass card for turning left/right in 15° intervals, and two buttons for walking forward/back in 0.25 m intervals (with keyboard shortcuts too). If I run against a wall or fall down somewhere, I should notice it through the actual coordinates display… and be able to tp back to some safe place.
- “bumping” and “falling” alarm for the above wish :))
- quick landmarks (setting/relocating), for temporary storing locations during the actual session.

And finally, some thoughts about the interface:

- my “blind” avi in SLeek asks herself the following questions:
1) where am I (coordinates, orientation),
2) who and what is around me (what do I “see”, the avi and objects list),
3) how can I interact with those (chat/IM/sit on/inspect/..),
4) what other actions can I perform (friends/search/move/tp/…), and
5) what other informations are coming in (messages, tp/friends offers, menus, …)
- this means, the main screen shoudn’t be the chat window, but the (separated) list of avis and nearby objects, along with my position and orientation, and some other important infos maybe. The chat window/history could be well below this display (like in the SLviewer). The other tabs are ok, but maybe all the incoming messages should go into one common tab, for not cluttering the interface too much…

OK, finished now, sorry for the length of this post. Keep the great work, and many, many thanks again!
So long, shogun

Delta, I’ve been using sleek constantly since 1.9b (mostly at work), and I’s only gotten better and better. The new 0.2 takes it out of the realm of an amusing toy and into the realm of a credible and useful viewer.

You rock. Sleek rocks.

While i’m amused by shogunvella’s long list, there are only two features I really really really want to see added to sleek, and I’m happy to see that one of them is already on your roadmap list (or it looks like it is).

1) I’d like to be able to see and sit on nearby poseballs, and “get a list of nearby inworld objects and do stuff with them” (from your roadmap) sounds like that.

2) The other thing I’d love to have is a “save” button on the photo/texture panel in the inventory view. this would let me go thru inventory (especially the photo album) and save more easily than in the official client.

and … how can I send you a little $US via paypal? or $L in-world? especially if it helps encourage you to do the “save photo/texture”?

I found what was causing my issues with SLeek. teatimer.exe a program part of the Sbybot Search & Destroy install. Shutting that down fixed my issues.

Oh almost forgot, when in follow mode, the avatar floats half a meter in the air.

I too would like to see the ability to sit on an object added. I would love to be able to use a thin client like this to persist an avatar in-world, in my store, without having to run a full client. I don’t even mind having to type in a key for the item upon which to sit.

Delta Said,

Thank you all for the nice comments (and long list of suggestions).

Some of the suggestions are on the Roadmap already, either directly or by side effect of another feature.

For saving snapshots/textures from Inventory, I want to see if there are any permissions I have to check. Being able to easily save someone else’s work might not bode well, if the whole CopyBot fiasco from several months ago is any indication. :)

And also, thank you all for the bug reports! They’re all noted.

Oh, one more thing.

I’m looking into asking for donations through PayPal. Of course, you’ll never be required to donate in order to use SLeek, but if you want to support the development of SLeek (and maybe future projects), you can donate if you want.

I’ll probably put the donate button on this site, on one of the sidebars. In SLeek, it’ll be somewhere in the Help menu.

Google ads were another thing that came to mind, but I probably won’t go that route, at least not now.

Dear Delta,

I want to congratulate for his creation. Unhappily a serious problem happened after I executed his software (SLeek). My INVENTORY doesn’t appear in his software, and inside of Client Oficial, my inventory was blocked for all of the functions, less to wear clothes and to read notecard. Summarizing: I cannot give objects, notecards, and other, and I cannot give a notecard for another people, for example.
Help me please, to have a lot of things inside of my inventory and I cannot lose.

Very thankful.

Delta Said,

Elcio,

While I’m sorry that that happened, I do not believe that SLeek caused it. Unless you tell it to, SLeek does not change your inventory. It sounds like an issue with Linden Lab’s servers.

So perhaps you could contact Linden Lab about it. I cannot do anything about it otherwise.

mygif
July 20th, 2007 @8:35 pm

Delta,

Unhappily it happened after I login in SL through SLeek.
The largest problem is that the personnel of LidenLabs is long to answer.
But everything well? Who ordered me to do.

Thank you.

July 20th, 2007 @8:38 pm

Delta,

After login, my change created a new inventory, as if the other didn’t exist. My old inventory doesn’t appear more in SLeek, he only appeared in the first login.

Elcio,

Right now, SLeek’s inventory functions are not completely working yet. You can only view inventory right now.

I do not know what kind of problem you are experiencing with your inventory. If it’s a problem on Linden’s side, there’s nothing I can do about it.

Sleek is great. The thing I would love to see is the ability to click on certain objects. Not a sophisticated build type touch but the ability to toggle ie sit/stand, click on/click off. This would allow me to sit in a chair and not be orbitted. :-)

Great job :-)
I’ve made a PayPal donation and hope you will keep developing SLeek.
But I have to agree with the fact that some basic “interacting” with nearby objects (sit/click etc..) would be very welcome.
I do hope you’re going to implement that soon.

It’s a great way to go less than cpu hugging platform.

I know it’s still in development but still need some stuff like pop up menu dialog to click on for buying, animation, accepting items and what not.

However, there’s a feature that I’d like to see, something similar to mIRC’s scripting side that can force the avatar to speak and movement as a bot. Can something like that be possible without requiring to use actual C++ nor Python? Maybe simplified language just as what mIRC used. It would be nice to set up some NPCs (Non-Player Characters). ;)

I have a serious problem with my inventory after using SLeek. I logged in with SLeek to do some inventory maintence. I moved a few folders, and created one New Folder, which I was unable to rename in SLeek. Immediately after closing SLeek, I logged in to SL. The changes I made in my inventory were not reflected in SL, and many items were not showing up at all, or folders were empty. I cleared my cache and restarted SL, and now all my items appear to be there, but they don’t show up in the Items count unless I physically open the folder that contains them. These items also do not show up when I do a search. Also, every time I Wear a new piece of clothing, I get a new copy in a subfolder inside the New Folder I created in SLeek (which my inventory evidently now thinks is the root folder, since it has created a Clothing folder, Trash folder, Objects folder, Landmarks folder, etc. Also, the right-click pop-up folder menu, which used to have several options like Rename, Delete, etc., now only shows No Options grayed out. I have cleared my cache and reset my filters. This is definitely a SLeek issue. Help!

Delta - very cool, very exicted to find your work on Sleek. I’m trying to get the wife (blind, using JAWS reader) on SL. Sleek is almost working, but it doesn’t read incoming chat text as it arrives; she must tab to incoming chat text box and arrow through to find new chat items.

I’m new to Jaws scripting, but I copied the hyperterm.jss script to Sleek in an attempt to make it work. Anyone have a Jaws script that works with Sleek?

I’m attempting to use SLeek on.. *gasp* a 26K dial up connection. I know.. I know… not even snails can successfully slime on this kind of a connection.

However. SL itself *does* work, just slow as can be. So I assume SLeek would still work enough to at least message friends in world.

Wrong!

It appears to connect, says that I am online, the like. However, it doesn’t actually connect. No one ever comes online, no one can actually see me online. Using SLeek on a faster connection is no problem, however, I never *need* it on a faster connection, but a slower one.

Any information on improving the logon process so it doesn’t actually time out?

Thanks,

Veni.

Can someone please help me? Used sleek, then logged into Second Life proper and my avatar is completely screwed up. It is a little girl with boobs and I am a male with male avatar. I have tried everything I can think of and the shape and clothing will NOT load. I can not put a shape on or clothing and I am really beginning to worry. How can I fix this?
